Dogs with megaesophagus need their esophagus protected against damage from frequent regurgitation. Many of use Prilosec or Nexium and sometimes add Pepcid to it. At first, some dogs need Carafate, too.

Protecting it from being “bent” when taking anything in by mouth is important so food has best chance to move down to the stomach. Being “bent”:
1. Can cause pocket or pouch to form where food collects and sits
2. Can make possibility of food passing through that area difficult
3. Is a CRITICAL no-no if your dog is suspected of having a stricture
